Wappinger Town Board Authorizes Class Action Civil Litigation Against the Manufacturers and Distributors of Opioid Products

During the October 28, 2019 Regular Meeting of the Wappinger Town Board, Supervisor Richard L. Thurston and the Town Board approved Resolution—2019-202, “Authorizing The Retention Of Tate Law Group, LLC And The Sultzer Law Group P.C. As Special Counsel To Commence Litigation Against The Manufacturers, Distributors And Possibly Certain Prescribing Physicians Of Opioid Pharmaceuticals To Recover The Town’s Damages In Combating And Treating Opioid Abuse”.

In response to many unfortunate opioid related fatalities and over doses in Dutchess County, it is the position of the Wappinger Town Board that the Town of Wappinger should participate in the multi-district litigation to recover its damages from those opioid manufacturers, distributors and certain prescribing physicians directly contributing to the high costs to County taxpayers in the form of increased social services, healthcare, policing and other expenditures so as to mitigate the impact of same. As well as to hold these agencies accountable for the horrific tragedies that have occurred in our community.
Supervisor Richard L. Thurston stated “ As part of our ongoing efforts to address social inequities in our community, we have initiated this lawsuit.” The Supervisor went on to say that “ Far too many of our neighbors have been affected by the actions of these manufactures and distributors, all monies recovered will be used to fight this blight on society.”

The Town of Wappinger has retained the Tate law Group, LLC and the Sultzer Law Group P.C. as special counsel to litigate this case on behalf of the people of the Town of Wappinger
