Wappinger Town Board Passes 2020 Budget

Town of Wappinger Town Board Passes 2020 Budget: Providing Enhanced Services WITHIN the Tax Cap

Wappinger, NY - During the November 18, 2019 Special Meeting of the Town Board, Supervisor Richard L. Thurston and the Town Board approved the 2020 Final Budget with a four to one vote.

The Town Board was able to achieve Supervisor Thurston's original goal, as said in the Southern Dutchess News back in September, of staying within the State proposed tax levy increase cap of 2%: “Our budget continues to identify achievable outcomes while staying within the property tax levy cap. I have honored my commitment, and, all the while, have continued to expand our core services to the community. Further, we have not sacrificed any safety, health or welfare needs", the Supervisor stated. The 2020 budget stays within the 2% tax levy cap and will offer expanded services to the residents of the Town of Wappinger.

Supervisor Thurston explained that because of the Assessor’s 2019 assessment increases, Supervisor Thurston and the Town Board decided to ease the taxpayer burden by keeping the tax levy assessment in 2020 steady at $1.93 – Town outside of Village. Original proposes could have taken the levy tot the 2% tax cap. However, with cost reductions, quality services were increased while holding steady the 2020 tax levy with a 0% increase.

The 2020 tax levy places the Town of Wappinger at the lowest level in comparison to our neighboring municipalities.

  • Wappinger (Town outside Village) - $1.93 per thousand
  • Wappinger (Village) - $0.80 per thousand
  • East Fishkill (2019) - $3.27
  • Fishkill - $2.76
  • LaGrange - $3.23
  • Poughkeepsie (Town) - $5.01
  • Hyde Park - $6.94
