A Message from Town Supervisor Richard L. Thurston

Dear Residents, as we reflect on the importance of Juneteenth for our nation and the world, let’s not forget the continued suffering and human degradation ongoing throughout the world.

The history of slavery in the US and around the world is ugly and something we can not and must not ignore. Some people say that we need not talk about it because it is in the past. It is not just in the past. Not only does the legacy of the past impact us significantly, but new wounds continue to be inflicted globally.

Part of the Proclamation issued in Galveston, Texas in June 19, 1865 stated : “ This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.“

These words relating to equality of personal and property rights, of fundamental freedoms, remain as relevant today as they did in 1865.

I hope that each person will take some time today to reflect on the sufferings caused by slavery and the ongoing impact felt by many people. And, please reflect on the significance of the sociological, economic, and even educational impacts still being felt today.

Thank you and may God Bless America as we continue to grapple the multitude of issues facing our nation today and every day.

Dick Thurston
