WAPPINGER CARES ABOUT OUR SENIORS!

Below is information about NYS & Local Tax Exemptions PLUS a Dutchess County Program – Friendly Calls

The Town of Wappinger Assessor’s Office verifies what exemptions our residents are receiving and informs them about what they may qualify for. There has been a large amount of activity with a postcard being sent out but we are making every effort to help everyone.

Below you will find information pertaining to the two exemptions the postcard is referencing:

Enhanced Star – Forms RP-425-E & RP-425-IVP

At least one owner must be 65 years of age or older. To determine income eligibility, your 2021 adjusted gross income, minus IRA distributions, must be less than $93,200.

Once a senior files for this exemption it does not need to be renewed in future years. The NYS Department of Taxation and Finance verifies that the homeowners income qualifies them for the exemption and lets us know of any changes.

A large number of calls to The Assessor’s Office have been about The Enhanced STAR Program and whether a renewal is needed.

The filing deadline for all exemptions is March 1st, 2023.

Please note: Homeowners who purchased a home after 2015 MUST contact New York State Department of Taxation and Finance regarding STAR registrations or questions.

Dutchess County Office for the Aging Begins ‘Friendly Calls’ Program to Promote Senior Socialization

This Program targets isolation among seniors

Dutchess County is seeking volunteers for its Friendly Calls program, whose goal is to reduce social isolation among older residents through weekly phone calls.

Nearly 40 seniors have registered for the pilot, which is run by the Office for the Aging. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will be trained in starting conversations, active listening and other topics.

The program runs in eight-week periods, but volunteers and seniors can choose to extend their weekly calls.

Call the Office for the Aging to sign up at 845-486-2555.
